Colombian military officers punished for killing civilians

Colombia fired 20 military officers over the killing of at least 11 civilians who disappeared from Bogotá.

This comes as human rights organizations complain that the the military is deliberately killing civilians and making it look as though they were armed leftist rebels so as to to inflate the count of rebels killed.

Christopher Sabatini, director of policy at the Council of the Americas, explains the ties between the U.S. government and the Colombian military, human rights abuses and the Colombian government’s oversight and control.
