Guatemala’s children languish from malnutrition

More than two million Guatemalans live in extreme poverty, and nearly half of the children in Guatemala are malnourished. In some areas, nearly every child is affected.

Most suffer from chronic malnutrition, which means that while they are getting enough calories, the food they eat is severely lacking in vitamins and protein.

As Samuel Loewenberg reports, this poor nutrition affects not only their bodies, but their future.

Young garbage pickers eke out meager living in Pakistan

An estimated 10,000 children in the Pakistani city of Quetta perform back-breaking work — garbage picking. They scavenge through trash heaps to find any items of value. As a result, they risk contracting serious medical problems.

International organizations have begun to call attention to the plight of these young workers, many of whom are the children of Afghan refugees who cannot legally work in Pakistan.

Filipino children driven to the streets by crushing poverty

UNICEF estimates that one billion children live in poverty — almost every second child in the world.

The Philippines is a microcosm of the problem, with children driven to the streets by crushing poverty.

Worldfocus correspondent Mark Litke and producer Ara Ayer report from the Philippines, where they encounter one man — a former child of the streets himself named Joe Dean Sola — who has dedicated himself to improving the lives of street kids.

Since the story was shot, street children have suffered even more as the result of the severe flooding in the region.
