Iran is trying to tackle a rising drug problem, as opium continues to pour into the country from neighboring Afghanistan. Al Jazeera English's Alireza Ronaghi reports that Iranian police have seized over 400 tons of drugs and have lost dozens of police officers in the battle to eliminate drug abuse in Tehran. But some Iranian officials say their efforts are pointless.

More than 90 percent of the world's opium comes out of Afghanistan, where the U.S. and its allies have led efforts to eradicate poppy crops. A Worldfocus contributing blogger argues that rather than eradicating poppy crops, the West should purchase crops for use as medical opiate.
