For U.S. troops and Iraqi civilians, this has been one of the least deadly months since the war in Iraq began six years ago. In fact, a senior U.S. military officer has broken ranks with his superiors and U.S. President Barack Obama, saying it’s time for the U.S. to declare victory in Iraq and go home.

But then there are days like Friday, when a series of bombs exploded near five Shiite mosques in Baghdad, killing at least 29 people and shattering the perception, at least for now, that Iraq is a much safer place than it used to be.

Michael Wahid Hanna of the Century Foundation discusses what effect the reported arrest of Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, a leader of the al-Qaeda-linked Sunni insurgency in Iraq, will have on Iraq's stability.

Despite significant improvement in Iraq’s security over the last year, violent attacks still shatter any notion that Iraq has become a peaceful place, as they did again on Thursday with two suicide bombings that killed at least 78 people.

But officials are hopeful that another event on Thursday may help reduce the violence — the reported arrest by Iraqi security officials of one of the most wanted leaders of the al-Qaeda-linked Sunni insurgency. Abu Omar al-Baghdadi was for years a key target of Iraqi and American forces.

U.S. President Barack Obama announced a timetable for the withdrawal of most — but not all — American forces from Iraq on Friday at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.
Some 140,000 U.S. troops are currently in Iraq. The president’s plan establishes an 18-month timetable for the withdrawal of most of them, expected to start soon. The administration refuses to divulge a specific timetable for withdrawal, but it is expected that the pace will be slow at first, increasing in later months.
Obama also made it clear that the future of Iraq will soon be in the hands of Iraqis themselves. Not all the U.S. troops will come home — to help the Iraqis, as many as 50,000 U.S. troops will remain behind. It’s expected that some of them will still be in the line of fire, including on patrol.
Michael Wahid Hanna, a specialist on the Middle East and international security with the Century Foundation, joins Martin Savidge to discuss what the remaining troops will do, the capability of Iraq’s security forces and Iraq’s future.
