As Iran battles dissent at home and abroad, hundreds of thousands of people showed their support for the government today.

Iranians took to the streets of Tehran to mark the 31st anniversary of the revolution that created the Islamic republic.

Geneive Abdo joins Daljit Dhaliwal for more on today’s events in Iran and its continuing nuclear defiance on the nuclear issue.

Abdo is an Iran specialist with the Century Foundation and editor of the Web site InsideIran.org. She discusses the size and strength of the opposition in Iran and explains the restrictive measures taken by the Iranian government.

(View full post to see video)

Officially-sanctioned anniversary rallies were punctuated by the customary “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.”

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad highlighted Iran’s ability to enrich uranium to a level closer to atomic bomb-making capacity.

Despite a massive security crackdown, there were also protests by opposition groups.

Severe restrictions on journalists made reporting on the protests difficult. However, in this report Nazanine Moshiri of Al Jazeera English was able to cover the official demonstrations in Tehran.

On the surface, the turmoil in Iran has been rooted in anger over the disputed election — but a deeper religious struggle is also taking place within Iranian politics.

Former two-term president Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, who currently heads the Assembly of Experts — which has the authority to oversee the supreme leader — and Ayatollah Khamenei are thought to have a strained relationship.

Throughout the campaign, Rafsanjani was very critical of President Ahmedinejad. Recently, his daughter, Faezed Hashemi, was arrested while speaking to a crowd of hundreds at a rally in support of Ahmedinejad’s main rival, Mir-Hossein Mousavi.

Four days after Iran’s disputed presidential election, the Islamic leadership said on Tuesday that it will conduct at least a partial recount.

Iran’s media said that several people were killed in Monday’s protests, held by supporters of the opposition candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi. The demonstrations represented one of the greatest challenges to Iran’s Islamic government since it came to power three decades ago.

Mousavi’s supporters held another peaceful rally on Tuesday, as did thousands backing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Geneive Abdo, a fellow in foreign policy at The Century Foundation, joins Martin Savidge to discuss the recount, how the protests will play out and the long-term impact on the Iranian political landscape and Iranian-American relations.
