The U.S. is disputing the number of Afghan civilians killed by airstrikes earlier this month, citing much lower figures than the Afghan government. Jason Motlagh of the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting writes that this is not the first time that the U.S. has disputed civilian casualty figures.

China releases student death toll in Sichuan earthquake
Officials in China have released the names of 5,335 children who died in the devastating earthquake in Sichuan Province last year, many of them in classrooms that crumbled in the quake. Parents and activists disputed the findings.
