Uprooted from their homes, refugees live in limbo

Irene Zubaida Khan is the secretary-general of Amnesty International. In this interview with Martin Savidge, she discusses refugees around the globe. She’s also the author of the just-published “The Unheard Truth: Poverty and Human Rights.”

Khan explains how 40 million people are uprooted from their homes in Africa, Asia and South America and the root causes of their dispossession.

Two weeks ago, the French government shut down a Calais camp that housed thousands of illegal migrants hoping to deter human smuggling. Al Jazeera English’s Hamish MacDonald reports that many of the migrants remain in Calais with their lives in a state of limbo.
