Although Jamaica treats gay men with scorn and basically blame them for the rampant spread of HIV and AIDS, this attitude is typical in many Caribbean islands. The issue with miss labeling this disease, while ignoring the sexual behavior of adults, is one of the major reasons why the Caribbean is facing this huge upsurge of AIDS and HIV. It’s time that the Caribbean wake up and face the music. This disease is much too serious to be labeled as a gay-man’s disease. We are not in the 1980s anymore.

On your newscast concerning HIV in Jamaica, repeatively gay men were targeted as responsible for the spread of HIV in the general population.
Not to pigeon hole sexual orientation, but I believe that gay refers to homosexual men and NOT the bi-sexual men who were basically interviewed as part of the cause of the spread of HIV.
Maybe it was oversight on your reporter’s part, but this type of newcasting is typical of mis-labeling and thus misleading the public to better understand people’s sexual orientation and it’s affect in our society as a whole.
If it’s bi-sexual then say so and don’t label it as a ‘gay’ created problem.

Many U.S. studies (including an April study from the CDC) have debunked the sensationalized idea that men on the down low are the missing link between African-American women and HIV, so I would like more evidence for Dr. Figueroa’s assertion that closeted bisexual men are the bridge between women and HIV in Jamaica. What is the basis of this assertion? Field experience? Research? What are some possible alternative explanations for the high rate of HIV among straight Jamaican women?

Of course, destigmatizing gayness has many benefits and would definitely help everyone in Jamaica, but I really question this particular argument.
