Iran and Venezuela strengthen ties, as Venezuela’s president Hugo Chavez met with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Yesterday, the two countries signed an agreement for Venezuela to export 20,000 barrels of oil to Iran each day.
Fernando Coronil, a professor at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, joins Daljit Dhaliwal to discuss how the export of oil to Iran undermines any new sanctions. They also talk about this weekend’s protests in Venezuela and Hugo Chavez’s suspension of radio stations.

Cuidado con Hugo Amigo Says:
Hugo wants to be a Simon Bolivar/Robin Hood incarnate for the 21st century. Lofty ideals, but when you cut off the media you’re heading down the road to dictatorship. The poor overwhelmingly support Hugo and he’ll likely be in power for a while. Also, his strengthening of ties with Russia and Iran and his (and others) opposition to U.S. soldiers using bases in Colombia is an attempt to show Latin America and the world that the Gringos don’t have to be the defacto power.
