Deforestation threatens the environment in Borneo

Environmental concerns are in conflict with the Malaysian government’s economic interests. Large swaths of tropical forest are being cleared for the timber and palm oil industries. And locals are demanding a greater share of the profits. In addition to deforestation activities, a dozen hydroelectric dams are also in the works.

Tony Birtley of Al Jazeera English reports from the Malaysian state of Sarawak in the north of Borneo.

You know, deforestation threatens all of us. From now on, we must model all our activity with consideration for ecology. The intricate network of the bio-sphere has unwritten rules and regulations. We are the regulated - not the masters of this dusty Earth.
