I was shocked and discouraged last night when I heard both your question re: the crisis in Nigeria and the answer of Marie Pace, who is suppose to be for peace and nonviolence.

Q. Why does this story matter to us?
A: They supply us with oil.

The screen is strewn with dead bodies and we only care because of our need for oil. As an American, I certainly hope this is not true. We care for the needless deaths. We care for the lack of democracy and corruption in power that makes life difficult for the members of these societies.

This kind of report confirms the feelings of members of hostile nations that our only interest in their countries is what we can gain from them. I think many members of our country truly do want to help those less fortunate than ourselves. This news report did nothing to confirm this fact, but rather the opposite.
