North Korean defectors face grueling journey to escape

The United Nations estimates that more than six million of North Korea’s 23 million people are facing starvation. Donations of food from the rest of the world have dried up following that country’s nuclear tests earlier this year, according to the World Food Programme.

The crisis has prompted many North Koreans to flee that country. PBS Wide Angle takes a look at these defectors’ perilous trek to freedom, a grueling 3,000-mile journey through China and into southeast Asia.
