Worldfocus producers hope for progress

Producers Yuval Lion, an Israeli citizen, and Mohammad al-Kassim, a Palestinian-American, work together daily at Worldfocus covering the Israel-Gaza conflict, among other issues.

They join Martin Savidge to share their knowledge of this divided region, in this third segment focusing on pessimism surrounding the current violence. They also reflect on their own interaction in the workplace.

See the first part of their conversation here: Israeli, Palestinian media show different sides of Gaza story.

See the second part of their conversation here: Producers recount personal stories from Gaza and Israel.

I was looking at MSNBC cable this morning. A commercial came on showing a building bombed in Israel, a patient loaded into an ambulance (with no visible injuries). Then, all of a sudden, the commercial starting asking for donations to Israel.

I thought to myself, “are they serious.”

First of all, looks like the Israelis are living better than some people here in the U.S. Then when you look at the bomb shelters the Israelis have - the kids have playrooms, there’s electricity, pretty much everything. Yet, the so-called bomb shelters the Palestinians have, they are huddled up next to each other, no electricity, and lucky to have candles.

Are they serious? Here in the U.S. people are losing their jobs, homes, retirement, and they want donations! The blockade caused the Palestinian Bank to collapse and they want donations!

In Northern Ireland there has also been no hope and now there is a solid peace process in place.
This to me is similar to the Israeli/Palestinian conflist. The Palestinians must have
a homeland and self-determination. This however must not be at the expense of the Isreali people’s right to exist as a nation. Somehow Gaza and the West Bank, with a corridor, must get independence but with a total end to violence.
President Elect Obama and Hillary Clinton should invite George Mitchell and representatives from the two opposing sides in Norhtern Ireland to sit and speak with the Israeli’s and Palestinians. The nationalists would understand the Palestinian point of view and the unionists would understand the Israeli point of view. Yet they have made peace with their enemies in Northern Ireland so I think the same could be achieved in the Middle East.
