World protests erupt against Gaza invasion

Massive protests around the world have spread since the Israeli ground invasion into Gaza began, and Egypt and Jordan remain among the criticized for their ties to Israel.

Geneive Abdo of the Century Foundation speaks with Martin Savidge about the Arab protests around the world, Iran’s role in this response and the possible dissolution of the international “hope” associated with Barack Obama’s election.

What is the difference from what Hitler did to the Jews, as to what the Jews are doing in Gaza, or Lebenon two years ago? All of this death and destruction to innocent civilians are the same.

Neither the Palestinian people nor the Arab world can accept another defeat at the hands of Israel.
This would again bring more great shame to us which we could not bear so we must rescue Hamas from defeat at all cost.
We cannot lose face again at the hands of such a small nation of infidels.
It makes our beloved Islam and allah look very bad to lose so often.
This must not be allowed to happen and we have informed all Western leaders of this and threatened to stop oil exports unless they restrain Israel.
We are encouraged by the help of the Western media which we own and of course the majortiy of Western goivernment whom we own.
The media understand that they must ignore Hamas attacks on restrained Israel for over seven years and focus on the suffering of the Plaestinian people whom we hide behind to fire rockets into Israeli cities.
Even though this is a war crime the U.N. will never hold us accountable because we own them also.
They are carefully squeezing Israel’s weak and defeatist leaders behind closed doors to retreat again as they did with Hizbollah in South Lebanon.
President Bush,Mr. Blair,Sarkozy,Ms.Merkel and PM Brown have promised us that they will not allow Israel to defeat Hamas.
The Russians are working hard to pressure Israel to stop as well as Egypt and Turkey.
It has been conveyed to us that Ehud Barak and Livni understand their limits and do not wat to look weak before the Israeli public before their elections and so they promised President Bush a few more days of limited action until they retreat from Gaza.

The telecast piece regarding Israeli trauma caused by rockets from Hamas was very informative. Will you be showing how the Palestinian might have been traumatized when their land was given away to the Jewish people 60 years ago,and how they have had to live in squalid conditions and treated as non-persons without equal rights in their own land;dependent on those who can shut off their water, turn off their electricity and deny them shipments of food on a whim. It might be traumatic to live under these circumstances too. The other side of the story just might be quite enlightening. We don’t usually get to hear it.

For some reason, I keep seeing bloggers ask why doesn’t the other Arab countries help Palestinians.

Well first off, other countries have their own problems. That would be like asking why some Europeans why they don’t like Americans. Or, why some Guatemalans don’t like Mexicans. Even why from Africans don’t like blacks from America.

It’s not about race. Besides, from my understanding, Egypt, Qatar, and several other countries have been under pressure not to send humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Are Israel’s actions in Gaza justified? In no way. First, there is no proportionate response. Israel sends its war planes screaming over Gaza, whose population is more than 50% children. Even if no bombs hit their homes, they will still be traumatized.
Has Israel tried to negotiate? Absolutely not. It refuses to negotiate with Hamas. Why? Because it says Hamas denies Israel’s right to exist. So what? Are words enough to justify initiating a brutal war against Palestinian civilians? In no way.

Is the cause just? Again no. Israel says it wants to end rocket attacks. Then why has it for the last 18 months tried to starve and freeze the civilians in Gaza by closing its borders? No wonder the Palestinians, crazed with hatred, fire rockets. I condemn those who do this, but considering everything Israel has done to punish and deprive Palestinians, is it any surprise that a few crazy Palestinians want to kill Israelis?

Thank you for tonight for beginning to restore some balance by
(1) showing Sderot’s plight for the last 8 years, with the Martin Greenspan piece;
(2) finally reporting Egypt’s blockade of Gaza in the interview with Geneive Abdo. Egypt has kept its Rafah border crossing tightly shut for months. In recent days, it has allowed some medical trucks through, but still not food. Despite all the rockets, food going into Gaza still comes from Israel - and most medicines too. Israel is still taking in Gazans for medical treatment.

As regards the emotive report of people in Gaza: It is truly heart wrenching, and disturbing. But again - Hamas is primarily to blame. There is precious little mention that Hamas has many tunnels for weapons storage, which civilians cannot use. Why did it not build a single bomb shelter for anyone but its leaders? In stark contrast, Israel has kept civilian casualties low through bomb shelters. Hamas has also made a practice of firing from civilian areas and using human shields. The casualty count does not reflect culpability.

Anthony Cordesman noted that the civilian casualty rate is not high given the nature of Gaza worse. It is now worse than in similar conflicts, and would be dramatically higher if Israel targeted civilians. It would also be dramatically lower if Hamas cared about civilians, and stopped firing from homes and using civilian shields.

I hope and pray for peace for both Israelis and Palestinians. The tragedy is that many Palestinians are imbued with Arafat’s dictum “we will drown them in our own blood”. They are far more intent on the destruction of Israel than on the creation of a Palestinian state. And until that changes, Israeli concessions cannot bring peace, and people on both sides will suffer.
