Israel considers Saudi peace plan

Israeli President Shimon Peres met with Egyptian leader Hosni MubarakĀ to discuss peace in the Middle East andĀ endorsed the stalled Arab peace initiative.

Udi Segal, a political correspondent with Israel’s Channel 2 News, covered Peres’s visit and speaks with Martin Savidge about the outcome of the talks and prospects for the Saudi peace plan, saying that the talks could potentially hold great significance.

Alon Ben-Meir, a professor at New York University’s School of Global Affairs, agrees that the talks are significant and says that the initiative is now being reexamined because of renewed concerns about Hamas, Hezbollah and other groups that pose a threat. He also explains that though Israel would have to withdraw its borders to comply with the Saudi plan, the country would have other incentives to adopt the initiative.
