India launches lunar space mission

India launched its first lunar space mission, becoming one of a handful of countries to do so. To date only Russia, the U.S., Japan, China and the European Space Agency have sent missions to the moon.

Asif Siddiqi, a professor at Fordham University and an expert on the global space race, speaks with Martin Savidge about the implications of India’s recent launch. Read blogger reactions to the lunar launch below the video.

The Indian Space Research Organization provides an illustrated history of India’s 36-year-old space program and information on its latest mission.

A couple of Indian bloggers express their pride. The blog “Jaago India Jaago” calls Oct. 22 a “red letter day” for India.

At his blog, Dr. George Easaq writes from Bangalore that India is on the verge of an explosion of creativity, exploration and innovation.

At his blog, “The World of My Own,” Venkat Radhakrishnan contrasts the poverty and unrest in Mumbai with the completion of stage one of conquering the moon.

I think India has stopped taking money from west.
India is now a donar country after tsunami we humbly turned down the american monetary help.
and I think India is a poor country no doubt but it cant stop us from pursuing our dreams.
Every country has the right it is not a property of western countries.
Lastly these kind of space programmes will help us in generating future cash flows for our development.

Poor people are there in every country, no country is free from poverty even they pose as if they are rich

#2

You are wrong,How can any sensible person bring the talk of poverty in a space programme. This would result in enormous amounts of spin off techs and ultimately, not so rich will become a little rich,

#1

No tough questions here. How can India spend millions on a space program while a large portion of its population goes hungry? How can it take billions from the West and spend it on “national pride?”
